Our founder Tom has grown up in the heart of the Gower peninsula in Llanrhidian and has an unopposed love for the area. When this became a profession in later life it’s naturally evolved to the preservation and integral restoration of the buildings in and around Gower, especially the historic ones where the true love lies.
Tom came into the trade fairly later on in life after perusing some life long ambitions abroad in the Austrian Alps where he spent many years. He headed back home to South Wales where he completed a university degree before finally re igniting his love for carpentry.
He was lucky enough to have been able to pick up an apprenticeship with Kevin Lloyd (Lloyd builders and carpenters Ltd) who was and still is recognised as one of the best builders and carpenter that the Gower peninsula has seen. Tom stayed with the company for 14 years where he made his way from apprentice to right hand man and project manager of a company producing some, if not the best work in the area. Although it was originally a keen interest in carpentry, it soon evolved to a love for fine joinery work and historical techniques and the history of buildings that Tom found his passion. During his time under Kevin his experience grew from listed heritage restoration and development property work in Penrice estate, dealing with complex and sympathetic restoration of grade 1 and 2 listed properties to studying and preserving traditional techniques. This isn’t neglecting projects away from this model which were high end modern award winning builds and building methods but still needed these local traditional touches to make them top tier stand out projects.
After moving on to pasture new, Tom set up his own company with the unparalleled knowledge that he’d learnt from his previous mentors with the main insight to carry on preserving the heritage of traditional Gower building techniques but with the modern mindset of environmental, ecological and technological outlook. These concepts are adaptable from a grade 1 listed buildings to modern new build dwellings, it’s all about learning to adapt without loosing touch of the foundational routes of Gower and their previous craftsmen.
Tom has worked hard to preserve his reputation from understudying and working with Kevin Lloyd over the years ( even now to date as a confidant and friend) and his ethics, skills and mindset to bring this to his own company and is very proud to been seen as a predecessor to this as a true craftsman and trusted local contractor.
A lot of our time spent over the past years have been with local and previous clients. Some of which have gone on to be life long friends. We have always heavily relied upon word of mouth for our work which we find is the most genuine form of advertising and is such a massive praise to us but as times change we understand that social presence has to be involved. We are always blown away from an enquiry from further afield that has been recommended to us and we never take that for granted. We may not be as affluent in this area as others but we aren’t all perfect and this is something we need to delegate and introduce more so we hope to get this rectified.
As a main contractor we have always worked very closely with a select few subcontractors and have formed a family like bond over many years to deliver the highest standards possible to a project. By working alongside these extremely talented trades we all have an understanding of what trade before and after requires and do that extra bit to make it easier for not just them but the project. This ensures that as a client looking in that they have a belief in our work and at the same time mitigating stress from what is a very stressful area of life. We understand that to get to a stage in life to do projects like this it takes a lot of work and effort and that the outcome should reflect that.
